Experience Equus Level I CranioSacral Therapy

Developed by Dr. Sandi Howlett DC CST-D

Experience Equus is 4 days of CST for horses, where we have a classroom setting in the mornings, and lab or hands on sessions all afternoon. All of the practice is on horses, not people. We cover how CST can be applied to horses and especially focus on the horse’s way of being in the world, so as to bring in elements of equine facilitated therapy, or horse behavior, as this is done to help the students gain a perspective of the clinical application of CST on horses and how it is uniquely different from working with humans.

Dr. Howlett (Sandi) is a 1987 graduate of the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College in Toronto, and spent the first 18 years of her professional career in the Annapolis Valley of Nova Scotia. She relocated to Peterborough, Ontario in September 2005. Dr. Howlett has been using CranioSacral Therapy (CST) techniques in her practice since 1992. She has completed her Advanced II training, and has received her diplomate certification (CST-D).

Following the CST networks and opportunities for advancement, Dr. Howlett has added SomatoEmotional Release (SER), Heart Centered Therapy (HCT), and Brain Curriculum (BC), and Lymphatic Drainage Therapy (LDT) to her therapeutic skill set. She often volunteers as a teaching assistant from the introductory to advanced levels and is a certified Teaching Assistant (TA).

Sandi offers a comparison, wherever possible and practical, from CST 1, so there are elements of a review of sorts, but there are more techniques and techniques specifically adapted for horses.

Because we are working with horses, who are energetic, sentient, magnificent beings, we as practitioners, need to be aware of our own energy fields and how we move in the world with our energy, as the horse responds to that first and foremost and does not rely on language. Having said that, there are exercises in the lab to discover ourselves as well as practicing being neutral so that we may approach and engage with the horse. Again, this may be interpreted as some as equine facilitated therapy, but we are not asking the horses to assist us in clearing our own issues, but we need to be aware of whether or not our ‘stuff’ is in the way of an effective therapist – client rapport and relationship.

Description of the workshop Experience Equus

Level 1

This 4 day class provides an opportunity for CranioSacral Therapists to develop and expand their non-verbal dialoguing skills through the exploration of inter-species communication. Therapists learn to listen with their hands, their hearts, and their inner wisdom.

Course content includes introduction to equine anatomy, physiology and biomechanics, as well as CranioSacral techniques for horses. Theory and practical application is included. Participants receive lectures in the mornings, with afternoon practice sessions with horses using equine CranioSacral Therapy.

Course syllabus also includes:

For the past 6 years a group of therapists have joined Heath Wilson CST-T in offering CST treatments to carers on the Saturday of their annual weekend. It is so very popular that Health has been requested to come and bring therapists this year again.

Heath and the therapists offer their services for free. The first year it was Mike Wilson, Deirdre Kennedy, Susan McDermott and Heath and they were mobbed, everyone wanted treatments, when word went out.

Having experienced the hardship some of these people have to cope with often with two family members and no support, this weekend for them is wonderful.

Venue: Gleneagles Hotel, Killarney, Co Kerry

Date: Saturday 24th March 2012

Anybody from CST I up is most welcome if you have acupuncture or another therapy as well, you are more than welcome. We start at 10am and finish at 4.30pm. Lunch and beverages provided. Bring your own plinths covers etc.

I am delighted to confirm as I outlined at the IACST meeting The Meningitis Trust is very keen to refer clients for Craniosacral Therapy as their nurse Lisa Slattery who I have met with feels it would meet their needs both for physical and emotional difficulties following Meningitis illness. Their service is available to both children and adults.

They cover the cost for their clients for up to six sessions, if the client would benefit from further treatment that can be approved.

They pay our therapists and counsellors a rate of €55 an hour. They would love to be able to pay more but as they are funded through donations this is the rate that they can currently afford.

Lisa and The Meningitis Trust details are as follows:

If you have news of an event or something happening in the CST world that you would like to share please call or email me mary.upledger@gmail.com or 087 2696355

At Upledger Ireland we have had a busy year. We are planning the 2012 schedule and it includes Paediatrics I with Carol McLellan and a new workshop Experience Equus with Dr Sandi Howlett. Last August we had a visit from John Matthew Upledger CEO of Upledger Institute and Dawn Langnes International Director. We got to know JM and Dawn and showed them the local area and they meet up with some of the team!

We will be heading for Florida for Beyond the Dura 19th to 22nd April 2012.

The conference is entitled New Horizons of CranioSacral Therapy. It will celebrate Dr John’s 80th birthday and the 30th anniversary of the first printing of CranioSacral Therapy. This is the 11th International Upledger Beyond the Dura Research conference. It is a great reunion of the elite of CranioSacral Therapy practitioners from around the world. The conference explores the development of Craniosacral Therapy and we are invited to bring our ideas, our hands and our desire for exploring the future of CST. Join us if you can!

Congratulations to all who took part in this year’s exams Techniques Certification exam. If you are struggling with the essays or are getting ready for the practical and multiple choice, remember you don’t have to do it alone we are here to support you when you need it. Attending CST I or II can be useful for revising the material for the exam. If you have applied for the exam and have not had a chance to TA yet you can repeat the class for 270euro. We can help you get in touch with others in your area who are getting ready for the exam or contact me directly.

Finally congrats to Ger who taught his first CST I workshop in October!

I’ll be updating this page on a monthly basis so keep the news rolling in.

CRANIOSACRAL THERAPY has been part of the Module for Complementary Therapy offered to Final Year Nursing students at University College Cork since 2007. Twenty five 4th Year Nursing students from Midwifery, General, Mental Health and Disability/Special Needs have been choosing this module since the module was first introduced. The co-ordinator, Anna O’Leary and her team have carefully selected a variety of therapies that are integrated with orthodox medicine/nursing, facilitating an introductory class for nursing students close to their completion of initial training. Evaluation by students, teachers and the facilitator team allows for tailor-made content and an approach designed to needs of the students and Faculty. Specific goals linked to learning outcomes are set down by the faculty from the onset.

Planning is underway for this module to be made available to post-graduate nursing students in the near future subject to funding.

As a Science post-graduate of UCC, I am excited and honoured to be available to my alma mater to give something in return. Student nurses have shown passion and enthusiasm to learn something of the therapies such as craniosacral therapy and agree there are many applications in their fields. It is an opportunity for a worthwhile forum for exchange of ideas and practise (adult and paediatrics), in the current approach to health. Though the input is limited to two hours annually, the scope for introducing this adaptable and rapidly expanding body therapy, CRANIOSACRAL THERAPY is expansive and rewarding. As a graduate of Upledger Institute, I am privileged to bring information on CRANIOSACRAL THERAPY training to students of nursing.
