Caring for the Carers

For the past 6 years a group of therapists have joined Heath Wilson CST-T in offering CST treatments to carers on the Saturday of their annual weekend.  It is so very popular that Health has been requested to come and bring therapists this year again.

Heath and the therapists offer their services for free.  The first year it was Mike Wilson, Deirdre Kennedy, Susan McDermott and Heath and they were mobbed, everyone wanted treatments, when word went out.

Having experienced the hardship some of these people have to cope with often with two family members and no support, this weekend for them is wonderful.

Anatomy and Physiology in Cork

Laurence Hattersley is running an Anatomy and Physiology course this year the dates are as follows:-

Kerdiffstown House Estate is approximately a 25 minute drive from Dublin International Airport.  Travelling south bound on the M50, take the exit for the N7 (the Naas Road) and travel towards Naas.  Once on the N7 take the junction 8 exit signposted for Johnstown / Kill, take the 4th exit marked Sallins, at the next roundabout take the 2nd exit marked Sallins, the entrance is 500 years from the exit on the right.

Kerdiffstown House is approximately a 30 minute drive from Dublin’s city centre.  Follow the signs for the M50, once on the M50 take the exit for the N7 (the Naas Road) and travel towards Naas.  Once on the N7 take the junction 8 exit signposted for Johnstown / Kill, take the 4th exit marked Sallins, at the next roundabout take the 2nd exit marked Sallins, the entrance is 500 yards from the exit on the right.

At Upledger Ireland we have had a busy year. We are planning the 2012 schedule and it includes Paediatrics I with Carol McLellan and a new workshop Experience Equus with Dr Sandi Howlett. Last August we had a visit from John Matthew Upledger CEO of Upledger Institute and Dawn Langnes International Director. We got to know JM and Dawn and showed them the local area and they meet up with some of the team!

We will be heading for Florida for  Beyond the Dura 19^th to 22^nd April 2012.

The conference is entitled New Horizons of CranioSacral Therapy. It will celebrate Dr John’s 80^th birthday and the 30^th anniversary of the first printing of CranioSacral Therapy. This is the 11^th International Upledger Beyond the Dura Research conference. It is a great reunion of the elite of CranioSacral Therapy practitioners from around the world. The conference explores the development of Craniosacral Therapy and we are invited to bring our ideas, our hands and our desire for exploring the future of CST.  Join us if you can!

Congratulations to all who took part in this year’s exams Techniques Certification exam. If you are struggling with the essays or are getting ready for the practical and multiple choice, remember you don’t have to do it alone we are here to support you when you need it. Attending CST I or II can be useful for revising the material for the exam. If you have applied for the exam and have not had a chance to TA yet you can repeat the class for 270euro. We can help you get in touch with others in your area who are getting ready for the exam or contact me directly.

CRANIOSACRAL THERAPY has been part of the Module for Complementary Therapy offered to Final Year Nursing students at University College Cork since 2007. Twenty five 4th Year Nursing students from Midwifery, General, Mental Health and Disability/Special Needs have been choosing this module since the module was first introduced. The co-ordinator, Anna O’Leary and her team have carefully selected a variety of therapies that are integrated with orthodox medicine/nursing, facilitating an introductory class for nursing students close to their completion of initial training. Evaluation by students, teachers and the facilitator team allows for tailor-made content and an approach designed to needs of the students and Faculty. Specific goals linked to learning outcomes are set down by the faculty from the onset.

Planning is underway for this module to be made available to post-graduate nursing students in the near future subject to funding.

As a Science post-graduate of UCC, I am excited and honoured to be available to my alma mater to give something in return. Student nurses have shown passion and enthusiasm to learn something of the therapies such as craniosacral therapy and agree there are many applications in their fields. It is an opportunity for a worthwhile forum for exchange of ideas and practise (adult and paediatrics), in the current approach to health. Though the input is limited to two hours annually, the scope for introducing this adaptable and rapidly expanding body therapy, CRANIOSACRAL THERAPY is expansive and rewarding. As a graduate of Upledger Institute, I am privileged to bring information on CRANIOSACRAL THERAPY training to students of nursing.

One of the most rewarding aspects of my career is hearing of manual therapists who use CranioSacral Therapy (CST) to help children lead more comfortable lives.

Over the years, CST has become widely recognized for its effectiveness with autism and other particular challenges. Yet to me, the real beauty is in its everyday practicality. Simply put, anything in the human body that can benefit from greater fluid flow can benefit from CranioSacral Therapy.

In Working Wonders, Changing Lives With CranioSacral Therapy (North Atlantic Books, 2005), Chuck Olson, RMT, shares his personal experiences treating his daughter’s earaches with CST. His story speaks volumes on the power of a gentle touch to make a profound change:

From the day my daughter Jessica was born, she had constant ear infections. We’d go to the pediatrician, who would give us a round of Amoxicillin, which then progressed to Zithromax, which ultimately led to her always being on some form of antibiotic.

This went on for the first three years of her life, even prompting a myringotomy with ear tubes, much to my consternation, shortly after her second birthday. That lasted for about three months, until the tubes fell out and it started all over again.

Shortly after her third birthday, I was in Dallas taking three Myofascial Release classes over a period of ten days. On the third day of classes, the instructors started talking about CranioSacral Therapy (CST). They demonstrated the 10-Step Protocol, which we then practiced for the next couple of hours and once again the following day. They mentioned that CST is very helpful in alleviating ear infections.

The Friday before I was to come home, my wife called to say that she had taken Jessica to an ear-nose-throat (ENT) specialist who told her that Jessica had a complete bilateral blockage. She then proceeded to tell me that they had scheduled a second operation for ear tubes in ten days.

When I got home, I could tell that Jessica had been crying from the pain and was running a fever. That night and for the next five days, for approximately twenty minutes a day, I attempted to employ the rudimentary CST techniques we had been taught. I didn’t know if they would help, but I knew that I didn’t want my daughter to have to repeat the hellish trauma she had been subjected to barely a year before.

The next Tuesday, we went back to the ENT for a pre-op examination. He looked first in one ear and then the other with his scope. His only comment was, “Hmm.” Then he did a tympanogram on both ears and asked, “What was the matter with her?” We told him that she had a complete bilateral blockage of both ears. To this he questioningly remarked, “Really?”

He then put Jessica in the audio booth and ran a full audiogram on her. At the conclusion he said, “Her hearing is perfect. There’s nothing wrong.” Then he said something that I’m sure pained him very much to say, “I’m cancelling her surgery.”

The doctor asked me what we had done to Jessica, and I replied that I had done CranioSacral Therapy on her. He said he had never seen such a rapid recovery from such a severe infection. He commented that he’d heard of CranioSacral Therapy being used for autism, but never for ear infections.

I offered him my card and told him I’d appreciate any referrals he could send my way. Needless to say, I never heard from him, and we haven’t seen him since. That was seven years ago, and Jessica has never had another ear infection!

Within the next couple of weeks, I scheduled my first formal CranioSacral Therapy class through The Upledger Institute and haven’t looked back since. Learning CST was the best thing that ever happened to my bodyworking career and certainly for my daughter.

I have since worked on my nephew for the same reason, with exactly the same results. My stepsister was ecstatic! CST has a faithful following in our family. Thank you, Dr. John!
